Cashews Worth the Hunt

Almost no cashews are grown in the US - they're a tropical nut - and the supply chain behind the cheap bag is grim: the shell is caustic, and most cashews are hand-cracked by underpaid, often unprotected workers in Asia. The makers here buy fair-trade or direct, so the people who shelled your cashews got paid and protected. A few roast them into something worth the jar.

How this list works. Every maker here is small or independent, actually ships what it makes, and earns its spot on merit — nobody pays to be listed. Fair-trade or direct-sourced cashews from co-ops and family roasters - the people who shelled them got paid and protected.

Worker-Owned Co-op

Equal Exchange

West Bridgewater, MA - fair-trade organic cashews
$$★★★★★✈️ Ships fast

A worker-owned co-op running on fair-trade terms since 1986, sourcing organic cashews from small farmer groups - a women's collective in Kerala, India and the Aprainores co-op in El Salvador. Every worker at Equal Exchange owns a share; every farmer partner gets a fair-trade price. You're buying the whole chain done right.

Why it isn't on AmazonCashew shelling is dangerous, low-paid work; a co-op that names its farmer partners and pays fair-trade is the opposite of an anonymous bulk bag.

Employee-Owned, Organic

Tierra Farm

Valatie, NY - organic, dry-roasted in-house
$$★★★★★✈️ Ships fast

An employee-owned organic roaster 20 miles south of Albany, dry-roasting cashews in small batches in a solar-powered facility - no oil, no fry. They buy certified-organic and lean on direct farmer relationships, and coat some in fair-trade chocolate. Raw, dry-roasted, and salted.

Why it isn't on AmazonSmall-batch dry-roasting with no oil, from an employee-owned shop, is a different product than the oil-fried commodity cashew bagged by the ton.

Ethical-Processing Focus

Beyond the Nut

fair-trade cashews, transparent supply chain
$$★★★★🚛 Ground only

A smaller outfit built specifically around the ethics of cashew processing, sourcing and processing under fair-trade standards so the shelling is done safely and paid fairly. Cashews sold with the supply chain as the whole point, not an afterthought.

Why it isn't on AmazonMost cashew brands stay silent on who cracked the shells; a maker that leads with fair processing is telling you what the commodity bag won't.

MA Artisan Roaster Since 1990

Fastachi

Watertown, MA - hand-roasted, salt only
$$$★★★★✈️ Ships fast

A family shop Souren and Susan Etyemezian started in 1990, hand-roasting cashews in small batches with nothing but salt to bring out the nut. Part of a broader roasted-nut and gift line they ship nationwide from their Watertown kitchen. The gift-worthy end of the cashew.

Why it isn't on AmazonA hand-roasting shop working in small batches with a single seasoning is a maker's touch you won't find in a warehouse-roasted commodity tin.

Cashews FAQ
Why are cashews never sold in the shell?

The shell contains urushiol, the same caustic oil as poison ivy, so cashews must be roasted or steamed and hand-shelled before sale. That shelling is skilled, hazardous work, often done by hand in South and Southeast Asia. It's the human cost hidden in a cheap bag, and the reason fair-trade sourcing matters more for cashews than almost any other nut.

Are cashews grown in the United States?

Essentially no - the cashew tree needs a tropical climate and the US has no commercial crop. So a 'local' cashew doesn't exist; the meaningful choice is how they were sourced and processed. Fair-trade and direct-trade brands pay farmers and shellers fairly, which is the independent story here.

What's the difference between raw and roasted cashews?

'Raw' cashews aren't truly raw - they've already been heated to remove the toxic shell, just not roasted for flavor. Roasted cashews are cooked again to deepen the taste and crunch. Dry-roasted (like Tierra Farm's) uses no oil; oil-roasted adds fat and usually more salt.

How should I store cashews so they don't go rancid?

Cashews are high in oil and turn rancid faster than you'd think at room temperature. Keep them sealed in the fridge for a few months, or the freezer for up to a year - they thaw in minutes. Buy from a maker with real turnover so they're fresh when they reach you.
