Gumbo, and where to source it

Gumbo — 5best2buy.com 5BEST2BUY.COM Gumbo American 5best2buy.com

Everything in gumbo rides on the roux, so you use good flour and stand at the stove the whole time it browns. The one non-negotiable technique: cook the flour and oil to the color of dark chocolate, stirring constantly, without letting a single fleck burn, because a burnt roux poisons the whole pot.

The Method
  1. Build the dark rouxWhisk the flour into an equal amount of oil over medium heat and stir constantly for 30 to 40 minutes until it's the color of dark chocolate. Don't walk away; if it burns, start over.
  2. Add the trinityDump the diced onion, pepper, and celery straight into the hot roux; it will stop the cooking and smell incredible. Stir until softened.
  3. Simmer the baseWhisk in the broth a cup at a time so the roux loosens without lumps. Add the sausage and chicken, bring to a simmer, and hold 60 minutes.
  4. Finish and servePull the chicken, shred it, and return it. Season with salt and cayenne, then spoon over cooked rice.

Straight Answers
Can you make Gumbo in an air fryer? — Yes, with an insert

Not on its own — an air fryer can’t hold a pool of liquid. You can simmer it in an oven-safe dish or a silicone insert made to fit the basket, but the broth won’t reduce or brown the way it does on the stove, and that insert comes out scorching, so use oven mitts. For real depth, a pot on the stove wins.

Can you freeze Gumbo? — Yes

Yes — it freezes well. Cool it fully, portion into airtight containers, and it keeps a few months; thaw in the fridge and reheat gently.

Can you make Gumbo ahead of time? — Yes

Yes — it holds well and often tastes better the next day. Make it ahead and reheat gently before serving.

Is Gumbo gluten-free? — Not as written

Not as written — it contains gluten. Make it gluten-free: swap in a gluten-free flour blend (check the other labels too).

Is Gumbo vegan? — No

No — it contains meat, so it isn’t vegetarian or vegan.
